Nereo Preto

geologist

Nereo Preto obtained the PhD at the University of Padova the fifth of February, 2001, discussing the thesis “Depositional environment, cyclicity and climatology of the Duerrenstein Formation (Upper Triassic, Dolomites)”. During his PhD studentship, he was visiting scholar at the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Md, USA. Afterwards, he carried out his research activities at the Geosciences Department (University of Padova), mostly as a Post-Doc. Between March 1st, 2003 and May 31st, 2003, he collaborated to the International research program “Aquapast”, under the direction of Dr. Silvia Frisia (Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali, Trento, Italy). Since January 1st, 2005, he is researcher at the Geosciences Department of the University of Padova.

He published papers on the broad themes of integrated stratigraphy and geochemistry in national and international journals, and attended several international congresses. He also entered the organization of international meetings (Triassic Geochronology and Cyclostratigraphy field symposium, September 14-17, 2003, S. Cristina di Val Gardena, Italy; 32nd International Geological Congress, August 20-28 2004, Firenze, Italy; The Triassic Climate, Bozen, June 1-7, 2008).

His poster at the 20th IAS meeting in Dublin, IE (September 13-15, 2000) was awarded as best poster presented by a student. He was awarded the Humboldt experienced researcher fellowship in July, 2009. He is presently principal investigator of the ENI project “3D modeling of Triassic carbonate platforms”, guest editor of the special volume of Paleo3 “The Triassic Climate” and convener of a paleoclimatological session at the IAS meeting in Alghero (September, 2009).

His principal research interests are:

  • stratigraphy and sedimentology of Triassic carbonates;
  • cyclostratigraphy of carbonate platforms, trough a statistical-mathematical approach;
  • paleoclimatology of the Triassic.
